Deploy

After testing has been conducted, a revision process takes place to implement the changes deemed necessary that the testing revealed. A client handbook is produced to include all deliverables previously created and the nuts and bolts of the "how to" of the site. If necessary, maintenance training is scheduled. The site is submitted to the search engines and the site goes live.

Problems
  • Our testing did not reveal any major problems with the site. All problems revealed were minor and easily fixed.
  • There was no time for re-testing with users before the site went live.
  • The team would disband - how would evaluation of the site -it's success- be measured or tracked?
Solutions

The changes implemented were minor changes. There were no major coding changes that needed to be implemented. The course schedule did not allow for re-testing. Had time allowed, retesting of the site would have been conducted.

The team felt confident in its documentation efforts. Although the team would disband and everyone would go separate ways, we felt that Visuals by Donni met its goals for both the team and the client. We knew when the client was ready to change or upgrade the site, she had all the information at hand to give to a developer or designer.

It was left to the client to let us know if the site was serving her well. It was understood that as students, we had limited knowledge in the scope of post-launch evaluation.

Project Manager's Insight

This experience of leading a team was enlightening, frustrating and encouraging. Project management is such a blend or leadership and cooperation. It takes both great organizational and motivational skills. A shared willingness to learn and to listen assists in the success of a team. The most difficult part of this experience was telling team members when they were not performing to expectations and learning to motivate them to want to perform to their best ability, without appearing to be "bossy" or uncaring.

Having the major responsibility of communicating with the client proved to have its difficult moments as well. It took some finesse to convince the client that adding her "jingle" to the site was not a good idea; or that putting a price list on line would not help to meet her goals and objectives. The best solution was to approach these matters with respect and supporting knowledge.

The experience was a successful one. The client was thrilled with the product, the team dissolved without any animosity and some great networking relationships were formed.

Another challenge was the limited time we had to work with. Developing team members strengths and learning their personalities takes more time than we really had available. Because of this limited time, I felt I needed to take a very no-nonsense approach to leadership. Although I tried to be fair, to listen and solve problems, there came a point where I had to put aside the "soft" approach and implement some strict guidelines and expectations to get the job done. This exercise was one of trail and error. The experience I gained gave me insight into how to motivate different types of people, and how to keep my own personal integrity as well.
